Hey there, this is John Henny and today I want to talk about Breathy Singing.

Singing with a breathy sound can be a cool way to add texture to music. However, very often in developing singers I see this effective way overused. They often think that the answer to every verse is to just sing breathy, breathy, breathy and that creates a couple of issues. First, they’re artists that they love, who they think sing breathy.

Don’t sing as breathy as they believe. They will usually intersperse breath Enos with more focused tones to create contrast, rather, rather than just a monochrome breath Enos. Also when singing live, you’re moving from the studio which has very sensitive microphones in a very controlled environment to a very unusual controlled environment with much less sensitive microphones and your breath the vocals are going to get eaten up by the band or backing tracks very, very quickly and you will notice with your breath the artists if you go look at live performances, they’re usually singing far less breathy than even on the recording.

So I want you to be very careful about how much you use breathy singing Don’t let it become a lazy habit, which it sometimes does.
