Hey there, this is John Henny and today I want to talk about How To Increase Your Range.

Very often as singers, we will feel like we hit a wall in terms of our vocal range. This can often be felt as excess muscle, excess tension, and the voice just won’t go any higher very often will feel like we’re yelling. So how do we break through this area and extend our range beyond this jam that we’ve managed to create? One of the best ways is through vowels. And for a while in order to start finding those new areas.

Try a very narrow vowel. Now, what do I mean by narrow? Something like an Uber or an E, where the mouth is quite closed. Often when we hit that wall, it’s because the body the nervous system, is going into a yelling condition and it locks up. By narrowing this vowel. Ooh, you’ll more easily be able to access these upper notes because you bypassed the shout instinct.

Well, we are all born very good shouters. It’s a survival mechanism. And the nervous system is going to go to it because you’re taking the voice into the shout area, and that’s what the nervous system knows.

So again, the narrow vowel, you will bypass that shout mechanism, and then allow the vocal folds to start making the adjustments for the higher pitches without all the yelling muscles getting involved.
