Hey there, this is John Henny and today I want to talk about Tips On Approaching Lyrics.

Very often when singers approach lyrics, they’re very keen on learning all the words, finding the meaning, etc. But I want to encourage you to go a level deeper and find the sounds and the music within the words themselves. Apart from the meaning.

Find the different vowel sounds, the shades of the vowel that you want to do, I mean you can do let’s take an ovale, I can do a very warm, rounded, ooh, or I can do a slightly brighter Ooh. And there are different colors I can find within the vowels. Consonants will give you the rhythm. We have those stuck plosives like P Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers and in songs you want to find the consonants and how they accent the music and start letting that inform your performance great singers don’t just have the emotional context of words.

They utilize the sounds and the sound colors and the rhythm of words themselves. So I encourage you to take your lyrics a level deeper. Thanks.
