Hey there, this is John Henny and on today’s vocal tip, I want to talk about Using Too Much Air.

Air is obviously a very important part of singing. In fact, sending the breath to the vocal folds is what gets the whole process started, but sometimes singers will over emphasize airflow and they think by pushing more air, they will be able to sing higher or get those harder notes and what often ends up happening is this excess air either blows the cords apart prematurely before they’ve had a chance to compress this air.

So you get a weak Soundwave or your over muscle trying to hold back this air and you get a constricted in strange sound. So if you feel yourself being blown apart or really constricting, stop and see if you’re maybe sending a little too much air back off the airflow we just want a balanced flow of air so that the cords can then close over compress this volume of air and then when they open this compressed air becomes a Soundwave as in everything in singing. It’s all about balance.
