Hey there, this is John Henny and on today’s vocal tip I want to talk about working through the vocal break.

The vocal break is that dreaded area in the singer’s voice, where we tend to either strain or we crack and fall apart. Or Oh, and one of the key ways to get through the vocal break is to control your vowels. Now, what do I mean by that? Well, usually, when we go to sing higher, our nervous system thinks that we’re shouting because we’re all born good at shouting.

It’s a survival mechanism. And when we shout, you will notice that we take all of our Bibles really wide will say, na na, na and it just shouts. But the next time you’re trying to sing a high note, I want you to think of taking the bow the other way, we’re going to narrow the valley a little bit. So when you have a problem note on that vocal break, press your cheeks in a little bit, so that you get Mom, Mom, Mom Mom, rather than that yell.

And what that narrow Vowel is going to do is it’s going to help the resonance make the shifts it the resonance needs to make in order to get that higher note balanced. What ends up happening is we’re trying to hold on to the lower register, we go into that shell condition and the note either strange or falls apart.

So by narrowing the vow, you’re going to more easily experience what’s often called vocal mix or the blend into that transition.
